Cross-platform engineer trying to make native app dev as pleasant as web dev

Who said React Native is slower than "native"? 🤔❌ Left: Native (by @Google) Right: React Native (our client @humandco)

Unbelievable how many decades Apple has made us wait for this
FINALLY!!!!!!!!! In macOS Golden Gate 27 you can now record your screen WITH system audio. 🤯🤯🤯 We’ve been asking for this simple feature for years! 🙏 #WWDC26 Credit: u/Annual-Ninja1370

If resizing iOS apps like macOS app windows is to become the norm, React Native needs to fix the performance issues with useWindowDimensions() and getSafeAreaInsets() ASAP. It was a major issue on my React Native macOS and React Native Windows apps.

1 million threads alive simultaneously using 15.9gb: 16kb/thread, 0.7 μs/start avg. same vm/gc/etc. zero copy. (extremely early!)
Replying to @jarredsumner
And no, worker_threads / Worker is not that. 1 global object, 1 garbage collector, every object accessible across threads. No postMessage overhead. No cloning data unnecessarily. A thread should cost < 2 MB. That’s what good looks like.

The first step towards open governance for React Native is for its repository to become GitHub-first (rather than its GitHub repo being a mirror of the Facebook internal one), like I believe React is. This org rename is likely a move towards that.
⚛️ React repos just moved! GitHub org: /facebook ➡️ /react This reflects the transition to the React Foundation (which will likely be today's newsletter headline BTW)

Every year I sit down with my mother to explain how to use her phone and every year Apple sends 750 engineers into their little labs underneath their demonic Cupertino crop circle to come up with new and exciting ways to confuse her
iOS 27 now uses the top-center swipe-down gesture for the new Siri on supported iPhones and iPads.

One of the oldest NativeScript performance tips has been to use a single GridLayout when possible, instead of nesting multiple FlexboxLayouts. Minimising the depth of the DOM tree was the thing this advice was getting at. Cool to hear that it applies to the real thing as well!
Replying to @jorgemanru
If you render 1000 empty divs with absolute size and position and minimal CSS that'll also be fast! It's not the rendering that's slow, it's style and layout. Ignoring caching, style is O(num_nodes * num_style_rules), and flexbox/grid are O(2^depth_of_tree).

One of my personal favorite features announced at WWDC will I suspect be a sleeper hit: container machines, allowing your Mac to run a lightweight, persistent Linux environment with your home directory and repos automatically mounted: github.com/apple/container/b…

fun fact: tijdens de keynote hakt Apple een stukje 3k, 4k, 5k en 6kHz eruit wanneer ze "Siri" zeggen, zodat niet iedereens HomePods terug beginnen te praten 🗣️🚫

Rumours that SwiftUI was losing “political capital” and “credibility” within Apple seem to have been challenged, with this latest #WWDC session instructing on how to incrementally adopt it. Sooo… does it meet needs yet?

The move to React Foundation is likely to help React Native get past some age-old stalemates, like how to handle out-of-tree platforms. Could moving Flutter to a foundation help align with community needs better? Such as the frustrations that led to the community fork, Flock?

After attending two of the biggest React Native conferences in Wrocław and Kraków over the last year, I didn't know Warsaw had a Flutter scene too. Is Poland the home of cross-platform app development?
In Warsaw this week for Flutter Tech Summit. 🎉
