Cross-platform engineer trying to make native app dev as pleasant as web dev

Tokyo-to, Japan
Flutter looks pretty respectable for desktop apps! Implementing this on React Native Desktop looks like you'd need to create a lot of new controls from scratch. Curious what Flutter's RAM usage on desktop is.
Playing with a concept, and must say that multi-windows support on macOS in Flutter (master channel) got quite solid!

Point of view: you have been testing audio interruptions against different configurations of AVAudioSession all day

Two years of wanting to do this rewrite, two months of doing it. The Objective-C++ layer was a ceiling on what was possible in Expo Modules. That ceiling is gone now, and this rewrite is the platform for what we're building next. More on top of this is coming 👀🚀
Swift now talks to JSI directly. The Objective-C++ middle layer is gone. In Expo SDK 56 we rewrote the native module infrastructure on Apple platforms. Calls are faster and the stack is simpler. The seam that used to make debugging miserable is gone too. Here's how 🧵

An npm-style registry, from the engineers behind Vite, Rolldown, and Oxc, with the funding and infrastructure of Cloudflare… that could work! (or maybe it's something different)
Ok I'm starting this new project two hours after joining Cloudflare. Wish me luck!

Just got back home from App.js Conf last night. Was incredible to meet so many people I've collaborated with and admired over the last decade doing React Native opensource. Some photos! 📷

I didn't take too many photos this time, but here are some of the good ones!

Also toured the Kraków salt mines with my parents. I think photos don't really convey the scale of the place (which we saw less than 0.5% of, in two hours of walking) – it's really like walking on the set of Moria. Nothing quite like it as inspiration to keep on building!

I had the pleasure of meeting Aaron at App.js Conf last week and he was super nice, knows his stuff, and would be great fun to work with. Go apply!
I’m hiring exceptional software engineers for my team at @SpaceX. We are a small team based in Redmond, WA (onsite) that owns key parts of the @Starlink user experience: Starlink.com, the mobile app, customer support, AI integrations. No PMs. No designers. You ship from day one to millions of customers. If this sounds interesting, DM me something impressive you’ve built.

This is such a good solution to managing heading levels where you don’t know how your component is going to be composed (which is basically all apps, nowadays). Well done Firefox, and can’t wait for this to land across the board.

I have 181 great photos from @appjsconfof all you beautiful people 😍 Please RT to help get it to everyone in the photos, and tag anyone I missed. I'll post some highlights, but there's tons more in the album. Starting with @KimChouard's incredible DJ set at the afterparty!

Would be cool one day if React Native Linux (and React Native Windows, as Windows support seems to be in scope as well) could implement Expo UI using OpenSwiftUI 🤓
We are bringing OpenSwiftUI support to Linux! So far no GUI backend is added. Only a basic stdout renderer compared to the UIKit/AppKit view renderer of OpenSwiftUI on Apple platform. But you can evaluate the full OpenSwiftUI API here like Layout and other stuff here.

@appjsconf is over. It was so much fun to meet the fellas from the React Native community 🩶 Last time I did a top 5 speakers, and I want to say that all of them were great, but the special highlights for me were: @jmeistrich - How to Build the Fastest Apps: Break the Rules @wcandillon - Pixelicious @ziusko - Illusion of Portals @birch_js - Expo on Desktop @mironcatalin - Visual Editor for Reanimated I will attach links to stream with timings 👇🧵

I’m actually not against Electron apps (it’s a great framework) but we do need to close the gap so that React Native Desktop can be just as attractive. RND is more resource-efficient (though hoping Windows gets more optimised with time). Just need to catch up on other fronts.
Electron apps are a danger to the world.

I totally missed this news while frantically preparing my talk on Expo Desktop 🤩 My focus has been on macOS and Windows (as Linux attempts have come and gone over the years), but I’m very interested in this new effort as well. Go, go, Luna! 👏
. @reactnative coming soon to linux
