What I try to ask is: How does your new thing relate to x, y, and z <prior art>. Because (a) I'm curious, (b) it puts their thing into context, and (c) they should know.
Also, project read-me's should have a prior arts sections. Know and give credit.

whenever you tell people you built (or are building) something, and they respond with things like "(did you know) you could do it with this X, Y, and Z thing that already exists...", it's interesting to examine their possible motivations.

Hmm, just had to use (an apparently modern) interactive web page that included this in its “fine print”.
Trying to imagine why it’s there. Nobody updated that part of it since 1997? The earliest Wayback capture of the page is August 2007. Were people still using Netscape 2?

Suddenly it seems weird to hear talk of Higher Education as "a sector"... like it's just another industry (and hence can be left to the market).
Education is to industry what soil management is to farming. It's not "a kind of farming". If we don't do it well, the crop fails.
