Cross-platform engineer trying to make native app dev as pleasant as web dev

Good lord, did Apple actually improve the DX of something relating to Core Audio?!
macOS/iOS 26: CMSampleBuffer attachments are now typed instead of untyped NSDictionaries. Small improvement, but nice to see Apple polishing the older Core Media APIs for Swift. These frameworks rarely get WWDC spotlight, so easy to miss.

Just as I was getting started programming, Apple shipped overscroll to Safari and I absolutely hated it, so @Birchlabs took me through the nuclear response of compiling my own WebKit to try to undo it

One of my coworkers just reduced their React Native Android CI times (for deploying a beta testing build to the Play Store) from 55 mins to 18 mins! 🐇 They added `ORG_GRADLE_PROJECT_reactNativeArchitectures` to their env. Alternatively, there's an `--active-arch-only` flag.

These 2 settings are necessary in bare React Native apps if you want: • three-shake 𝙿𝚕𝚊𝚝𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚖.𝙾𝚂 and 𝙿𝚕𝚊𝚝𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚖.𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚎𝚌𝚝 • up to -15% JS bundle size • up to -5% Hermes bytecode size (affects TTI) If you use @expo you're safe – platform shaking works well

I had to make an international call regarding my pension, and I knew that my 60 minutes of Skype credit wouldn't be enough, so I tried something new. Ended up using a "made for iPad" app on macOS for the first time. Felt magical how it just worked, even with a studio mic.

"I like native UI" You like how macOS System Settings uses no progress indicators for any asynchronous task? Or how you can't edit nested Safari bookmarks? Or how you can't autofill your password in system dialogs? No, you like *performant* UI

Native UI being the "best" is probably an outdated opinion when it comes to Apple, who barely make apps anymore. Heck, Google sunsets more apps per year than Apple even make
I really like the UI in the native app and I think the next one I'll do in KMP and maintain native UI separate, but common logic. Many pointed out that React Native should be fast with Expo, so maybe that's my skill issue. Overall, I like the feeling of RN, but if my goal is to have the best UI I'll go with native or KMP. If I want speed and iteration, I'll go with Flutter.

I don't know how anyone can be productive when developing for Android. People dunk on Xcode, but it's a hell of a lot less flaky than Android Studio.

I remember, years back in a previous job, I was given a UI design to implement. I noted that it didn't show how to handle error states. The product manager responded "We'd like this app to be implemented with… no errors".
