2/6 I think we'll get better results sooner if we go for a sustainable web. That will require new financial structures and organizations that have longevity built into their models, for example, universities like Harvard. Insurance companies.

Is this a (user) feature or a bug? Seems like a good tool for the compiler developers but shipping language features or their compiler implementation that are too slow to use seems like a significant bug.

HOPL-IV is over and our personal virtual banquet is done. I got the CfP and a PC invite July 7-8, 2017, so I've been involved for 4 years. A long time for a conf paper, but 189 pages is not a normal paper. Thank you Guy Steele& Richard Gabriel for organizing HOPL-4.

This is the first totally new subject matter ECMAScript related standard publication since 2012. ECMAScript embedded systems APIs:

The 121st General Assembly held as a virtual meeting on June 22, 2021 approved 3 new editions of existing Standards, 1 new Standard on ECMAScript and 2 new Technical Reports (more info on ecma-international.org/news/). We are happy to welcome 5 new members.

Hillel's survey of influential but mostly dead programming languages is excellent. My quibbles are few and minor.
If you are interested in programming languages but haven't explored their history, this is a great place to start.
A convo with @litonico_ reminded me of this hillelwayne.com/post/influen…. In retrospect, I really like how it's just a listicle done really well. That's a format we associate with content farms, but farms are bad because they're low effort, not because listicles themselves are bad.

Exactly, implementation inheritance is useful when there is a need to extend/modify/muck-with an implementation while preserving the original. Impl inheritance is what Smalltalk provided. Inheritance as type classification was a secondary and usually misapplied use case.
The difference here is that I'm inheriting the implementation. The parameters are interfaces, but the arguments are implementations. I want identical behavior everywhere *except* in the tests, where I want something slightly different.

One of the greatest days of my youth was when I discovered I could just walk into any local IBM sales office and request any and as many IBM manuals as I wanted. A couple weeks later boxes of manuals would show up at my parents' house—no charge!
