Nobody seems to remember the role woman played as keypunch operators. Companies had from dozens to hundreds of keypunchers, almost all women. Mostly doing data entry, but they would also punch up program decks from forms filled
in by programmers.

Many started before microprocessors existed.
Some start when punch cards and goto statements were still a thing. BTW, in many cases the "new tool" is just a variant of something that was common decades ago.
the biggest excuse I've heard about tech employees over 40 is 'how will they learn these new tools'. Like, bitch they coded before google existed, I THINK THEYLL BE FINE.

There is a heavily under appreciated group of women in their 40s/50s who are AMAZING engineers and have likely been treated like crap their whole careers. They are so much smarter and more capable than most of y’all, but AGEISM!

We still have to hand dig 4 of these vaults ( it's upside down) 2 feet into the ground at each place conduits join. Segment length limit is about 550 feet to enable pulling the fiber. One vaults has 4 conduits, shared trunk + 2 service drops.

I was pretty strongly opposed to "private methods". They add little (except complexity) that couldn't be achieved using private fields+ordinary functions. But simplicity lost out to advocates for completeness ("if ES has private fields then it should have private methods")

Day two. All the (mechanical) trenching done and main conduit buried. No existing buried utilities destroyed. The rental trencher can be returned. Still to do: dig in junction boxes, some manual digging for individual service drops. Still a couple months until gigabit internet.

This was the start of trenching. The green box is the last FIOS box in the town we border. Verizon and then Frontier wouldn't even talk about providing us service.

DIY country cord cutting. Next week we and our 3 neighbors are going to attempt to trench in a half mile of conduit along our private road so we can get fiber installed. Can't wait to say goodbye to ex-Frontier DSL, land lines, and over priced Directv

Dan’s paper tells us the origin of the terms “abstract class” and “subclassResponsibility”. At Tektronix smalltalkers (@WardCunningham @KentBeck @rebeccawb, etc) started talking about "object responsibilities” and this usage spread among the OO design community.
