Friendly Machine Learning For The Web.
ml5.js aims to make machine learning approachable for a broad audience of artists, creative coders, and students.
We are thankful to Beth Fileti (@BethHeinzen) for highlighting this issue in a blog post. Read Beth's helpful reflection about the process that led to the discovery of this issue here: politetype.com/blog/word2vec….
The disabling change we've made to word2vec will remove all functionality from the library, meaning that projects using word2vec by importing ml5@latest will break. The only functionality remaining is to print a message to the console detailing the reason we've disabled it.
The decision to temporarily disable word2vec was made in alignment with our Code of Conduct. word2vec can generate harmful words removed from context, which violates our pledge to foster an open and ethical community for learners of all ages and backgrounds.
As maintainers and contributors, we recognize that we have a responsibility to provide safe and friendly examples for our community. The ml5.js maintenance team deeply apologizes for our lack of attentiveness in including this harmful model in our word2vec examples.
The team recently learned that the example models used to demonstrate our word2vec functionality include racial slurs and other offensive words that can produce harmful associations. Until we can revise the provided model, we've disabled it in release 0.7.1 & discouraging use.
The team has been asking how we can encourage the ml5.js community to create friendly, creative applications of machine learning. We look forward to growing these ideas with you!
After over a year of discussion and community feedback, the ml5.js team is so excited to announce the updated Code of Conduct and our very own software license! medium.com/ml5js/a-new-code-…
