Thread with excerpts from Richard Pipes' Property and Freedom (1999). Pipes is a historian of Russia, and the thesis of the book is that private property, as something distinct and protected from public power and sovereignty, is indispensable to human freedom.

In the 1980s, ~65% of conservative women & 60% of liberal women aged 25-35 were parents. By mid-2020s,only 40% of liberal women in the same age bracket had kids while young conservative women with children rose slightly to 71%, a 31% motherhood gap based strictly on political ID.

Those darn commercial double hulls are tough! Not bad for a 36-year old, Danish built 4,400 TEU containership. She was the former Majestic Maersk, one of 12 M-class containerships.
This video reportedly shows the damage to the starboard side of the Panama-flagged containership MSC Sariska V. The ship has been trapped in the Persian Gulf since February 28, when the war started. MSC has established an overland service to the Persian Gulf with cargo coming across Saudi Arabia and the UAE. MSC Sariska V appears to be operating as a shuttle ship between ports in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE. The ship was outbound from Umm Qasr, Iraq when it appears to have been damaged by an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV). We have seen similar Iranian attacks at this site by other USVs in the past. A few things to note. While the ship seems fully loaded, she is light, meaning that most of the containers are empty. The damage, starboard side amidships is largely above the waterline, thereby ruling out a mine - even a floating one. It could be a missile, but that damage would probably be more severe based on attacks we have seen on HMM Namu and CMA CGM San Antonio. Iran has targeted MSC ships in the past, with the seizure of two of them last month trying to exit the Strait of Hormuz. nitter.catsarch.com/DD_Geopolitics/status/…

There is not enough anti-ballistic missile production in the United States and this could lead to a crisis in different parts of the world. Russia is ramping up its internal production of ballistic missiles. I sent a letter to the White House and to the U.S. Congress. I hope they will understand and respond. 60–65 anti-ballistic missiles per month, compared to current challenges, is nothing. It is no secret and Russia knows this. We need to expand the production. I asked the previous U.S. administration, and I am asking today’s administration to give Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot missiles. We can increase the production of Patriot missiles. This will help us. This will help the Middle East and any other country that the United States decides to help. Until we produce a European anti-ballistic system, we will need support from the United States. From an interview with Face the Nation. (2/5)

🇬🇧🇮🇪 Britain is sounding the alarm about an EU country that has become a"backdoor" for Russian spies We're talking about Ireland. Dublin has issued 14,000 visas to Russian citizens - with a 90% approval rate since the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ireland is a member of the Common Travel Area along with Great Britain, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. This means that anyone who enters Ireland effectively gains access to Britain - without additional checks.

Hey, western commie! Nothing makes me laugh harder than a guy or a girl tweeting about "great communism" from a $1,400 phone, in a 3-bedroom suburban house, with a fridge full of food. Comrade. You would not survive week one. And here is why. In the USSR you couldn't just quit your job to "find yourself." Not working was a crime. Literally. They called it "social parasitism." They put the future Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky on trial for it. Your podcast about late-stage capitalism would've gotten you five years. You picture yourself as a commissar. You'd be in a queue. Three hours. For maybe bread. The commissars were a tiny elite with their own shops, their own hospitals, their own everything. You weren't invited. You'd be the guy informing on his neighbor for an extra ration. That brave political take you posted today? In 1949 USSR deported 20,000+ people to Siberia in three days for a lot less - for just being LOCALS. Whole families. Children. Cattle cars. You'd have lasted until your first "actually Stalin was misunderstood" reply landed in front of the wrong person. The gulag wasn't an edgy metaphor. Roughly 18 million people passed through it. Unpaid labor, -40°C, digging canals nobody needed. But please, tell me more about how you'd "organize the workers" from the group chat. Things get bad and you want to leave? You can't. There's a wall. There are dogs. There are guards who shoot. The whole design was that you couldn't go. The people romanticizing it from a comfortable suburb can always book a flight home. People in the USSR couldn't even move to the neighbouring city without permission. So wear the Che shirt. Read rge Red Book by Mao. Enjoy the iPhone he'd have confiscated, the internet he'd have banned, and the free speech that lets you praise the exact system that would have shot you for using it. Some of us actually remember how it went.
